Can you break out the audio from the output of a converter so that I
can pipe the audio to a stereo system. The TV does not have any audio
out jacks.

We get over-the-air tv using a converter box. We need to get a new TV.
The one I was thinking of (Panasonic TC-54PS14) does not have audio
out jacks as far as I can tell.

Since the converter box is the channel selector can I split off the
audio signal from it to my stereo system before it enters the TV. TIA.

All the coupon eligible digital TV (DTV) converter boxes are suppose to
have a set of analog stereo audio outputs you can connect to an audio
system. Check the back of yours, it should be a pair of phono (RCA)
plugs, white for L and red for R.

I looked up the specs on the Panasonic and you're correct that it
doesn't have an analog audio out, only digital. So, if your receiver
can handle digital audio, you can use that out and not use the DTV box.

Keep in mind that your DTV box doesn't output HD video signals. You
will need to use the TV's tuner for HD. It's possible the TV tuner and
DTV box may not syncronize the video and audio when both are tuned to
the same station. You'll have to see if they do sync. If they don't,
then you'll have to watch the SD video out from the box (which defeats
the purpose of having a 54" HDTV) or get a receiver that handles a
digital audio out. Another option is to look for a different set that
has analog audio outs. Some still do.

Thanks for your informative reply!

And yes, my converter box has audio outs!!! Never thought to look at
it.

My stereo system doesn't have a digital input. I don't want to replace
it, as it's a very nice low high end system: Classe CAP 101 integrated
amp matched with Thiel 1.6 speakers.

I assume I could convert the digital output from the TV to analog but
it sounds like that would require a DAC.

It's a puzzle to me why Panasonic (and others?) don't provide an
analogue audio out (let alone a pass through audio out) for an extra $.
15 or so per set, if that much. I assume they assume that anyone who
knows/cares sufficiently now has a receiver with a digital in.

Thanks again!

You're right, that's likely what they assume and it saves them a few bucks on
each set.

If your converter box has the ordinary white (left) an red (right)
audio output RCA connectors, then it is virtually certain that it
is capable of having the audio output split and sent to both the
TV and to your stereo system.

If your converter box has the standard analog audio outputs
(white and red RCA) then this is really an audio question, not
a "video" question.
