SLV-R1000 clock above year 2008?

Am I correct that the Sony SLV-R1000 clock cannot be set past 31 Dec
2008? I really like the SLV-R1000 and use it often for recording
analog cable tv. Is there a newer Sony SVHS VCR of similar quality
that can go past 2008?

Yes you are correct. Not only can you not set the clock past 2008, in fact the clock won't run past 2008. I would like to meet the engineer who designed it this way. To prove this to yourself set the clock to Dec 31, 2008 11:59 PM. Wait a minute. One would expect the clock to move to Jan 1, 2009. One could then set the month/day/time to Dec 31 11:59 again and it should flip to 2010. Alas, instead it moves to Jan 1, 1993!

Apparently SONY never anticipated this unit would last more than 15 years.
