Hi, I'm using Sony FX7 (PAL) and now I'd like to replace it with a
better a camera. I'm a solitary traveler and I will use it in my trips
around the world but rainfores, mountains, desert, etc.
I don't know if I will buy an EX1 or a NX5U, I have confused ideas.
EX1: better image performance, less wide angle, heavier, more
expensive
NX5U: lighter, more wide angle, more zoom
Can I know your suggestions, please?
Thanks,

I have like no time right now, so I'll make this very brief, but if it
were me, I would go for the PMW-EX1R with its 1/2-inch imaging system.

Also, if you're in Italy, you would want the HXR-NX5E (or even the
HXR-NX5P), and not the HXR-NX5U (or HXR-NX5N). The "E" and "P" models
operate off of a 50 Hz time base (which is what you want). The "U" and
"N" models operate off of a 59.94 Hz time base (which is not what you
want).

Thanks,
You're welcome, and hope this helps.

Using the URL that you posted, I tried to take a very quick look at
your work, but the link doesn't function, apparently due to a redirect
problem. Just so you know.

You're quite welcome, and also please keep in mind that since the "E"
model is the one officially sold in Italy, if you purchase a "P"
model, you may experience difficulty securing warranty service from
Sony should it ever be required. They might consider the "P" model to
be a gray market import item and thus refuse to honor the warranty.

Also, with regard to the PMW-EX1R versus HXR-NX5 issue, I prefer the
PMW-EX1R over the HXR-NX5 not only because of the 1/2-inch chips in
the PMW-EX1R versus the 1/3-inch chips in the HXR-NX5, but also
because the chips in the PMW-EX1R actually have 1920 by 1080 photo
sites on them.

The HXR-NX5-series products are spec'ed as having "Approx. 1,037,000
pixels with ClearVid array". That's significantly short of the
2,073,600 pixels in a 1920 by 1080 frame of video. Pixel shifting
interpolation upscales the image to the needed size. I prefer a
camcorder with full-sized sensor/s.

Also, unless you're hooked on Sony products, you might additionally
want to take a look at the Canon XF300. It's 1/3-inch just like the
HXR-NX5, but it's got full-sized 1920 by 1080 sensors and the encoded
video is 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0, so you've got twice the color
difference information with which to work in post. And it's MPEG-2
instead of the MPEG-4 Part 10 AVC / H.264 encoding utilized in the
AVCHD-format HXR-NX5, so it's somewhat easier to edit despite the
higher 50 Mbps data rate.

Plus, in terms of selling your footage, the BBC will accept footage
from an XF300, but not from an HXR-NX5-series camcorder.

The following Web page lists the BBC's "Approved HD Cameras" for
production purposes. The list includes the Canon XF300E and XF305E,
but not the Sony PMW-EX1/PMW-EX1R/PMW-EX3, probably because the Canon
products, although 1/3-inch, record 4:2:2 chroma and have a video data
rate of 50 Mbps. The Sony products are 1/2-inch but record 4:2:0
chroma at just 35 Mbps. Both are long-GOP MPEG-2 products and both
record non-compressed LPCM audio.

Note that the Canon XF300E/XF305E camcorders are listed as being "For
use by Independent productions only", along with the Red One and the
Sony PDW-700 and PDW-F800.

If you do ever find yourself working with or even just talking to the
BBC, you might wish to review the links found on the following page.

Guidelines Overview

Another nice thing about the XF300 is that you can send it to a Canon
service center for an upgrade that provides 50 Hz/59.94 Hz
switchability. The PMW-EX1R has this capability built-in as a standard
feature. In the case of the HXR-NX5-series products, you would need to
purchase two camcorders.

Sorry, it's still not working. Mozilla Firefox throws the following
error message:

"The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for
this address in a way that will never complete.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to
accept cookies."

At least in my case, I doubt that the problem is cookie-related since
I accept all cookies, including third-party cookies. Of course, I've
got the browser configured to discard all cookies when I close the
program, but that's unrelated to the problem.

It looks like one URL may be configured to redirect to another - and
the second one is configured to redirect back to the first, thus
creating an endless loop - and Firefox is detecting this and issuing
the message that I listed above, although the actual cause of the
problem could be something else. I apologize, but I don't have time to
look at the problem further right now. I suspect that it's easily
resolvable, though.
