There are 3rd party utilities that will add "burned in" timecode numbers
in the video frame for DV-AVI files. And I would also look for plug-ins
("filters"?) for your NLE software that adds that feature.

Might even be a plug-in "filter" for virtualdub, etc.

Thanks for the answer, but could be an option in my camcorder to "burn" the
dates the clip was *taken* on the AVI stream? Because, I'm filming my niece,
who turned 3 this February, and we ant to know when was each (1 min) clip
taken.

Many cameras appear to have a feature where it "burns" the time
and date into the video frame as the video is recorded. Of course
that would be completely dependent on whether YOUR camera
has that feature (or not?)

Here in the USA, we have some shows on TV which feature
humorous home video clips, and many of them appear to have the
time and date burned into the frame. Many of them are blurred-out
to obscure the information because once it is burned-in, it is very
difficult to remove completely.

Yeah, probably I should RTFM again... Two quick skims didn't find any
relevant option, although there should be one. But, the manual, for example,
gives
explicit instructions how to use the camera as an analogue to digital
converter (VHS to DVD). Again,
my camera is a Sony DCR HC-32 E, SD, mini DV.

All my Sony (prosumer and pro level) will pass the time /date imposed
on the picture only if you use the analog outputs, composite or S-
Video. If you output via firewire then that info is not visible but
imbeded in the data stream.

That must be it, it has an option to display date/time during playback, but
it doesn't mention details. I was used, to my previous, 8mm camcorder, which
had 2 physical switches for date/time, while the mini DV has dozens of menus
with hudnreds of options....

TIA,
With digital camcorders, I have heard that the usual method of embedding
the date and time is in post, where the editor gets it from the embedded
digital data.

I think there may be stand-alone programs available to do this, also.

Yeah, right, I presume so. Thanks a lot to all people
who answered.
