With Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 software, you can craft stories more
efficiently, save time by integrating with Adobe After Effects® and
Adobe Photoshop,® edit virtually anything thanks to broad native
tapeless and DSLR camera support, and enjoy industry-leading 64-bit
performance. Stepping up to the enhanced videoediting power of Adobe
CS5 is now easier than ever.

Top 10 Reasons to make the switch to Adobe CS5 Production Premium

1. Boost efficiency with unparalleled Adobe integration

Convenient disc and web video creation with Adobe Encore®
Create interactive Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, and SWF files from Adobe
Encore software from a single project file. Avoid intermediate
rendering by dynamically linking sequences to Encore—a process that’s
three times faster than in previous versions.

Smoother project workflows with After Effects
Easily hop between your edited sequence and After Effects as you
design motion graphics and fine-tune visual effects. Import Final Cut
Pro or Avid projects into Adobe Premiere Pro, and send elements of
your project, or the entire sequence to After Effects where you can
create opening titles, animated graphics, and world-class special
effects. Better yet, when Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects are
used as part of Adobe Creative Suite® 5 Production Premium or Adobe
Creative Suite 5 Master Collection software, use Adobe Dynamic Link to
see After Effects compositions directly in the Adobe Premiere Pro
timeline—in context with the rest of your edits—without rendering.

Intelligent native support for Photoshop files
Maximize efficiency when incorporating still images into video
production. Import and animate Adobe Photoshop layers in Adobe
Premiere Pro. Instantly edit Adobe Premiere Pro stills in Photoshop,
and then automatically match the frame size and aspect ratio of an
Adobe Premiere Pro project (even in HD) when creating new files. Get
better image fidelity thanks to support for Adobe Photoshop blend
modes, and take full advantage of support for Photoshop video files.

2. Work more efficiently with tapeless and DSLR footage
Skip time-consuming transcoding and rewrapping processes when working
with tapeless and DSLR footage. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 leads the
industry with native support for virtually any video, image, or audio
format, including DV, HDV, RED, DPX, P2, DVCPRO HD, AVCHD, AVC-Intra,
and XDCAM. Edit native DSLR footage from the Canon 5D Mark II, 1D and
7D cameras, Nikon D90, D300s and D3000 cameras, and more.

When you work with tapeless media in Adobe Premiere Pro, you gain
three key advantages. First, you save time because you’re able to
start working with footage immediately—sometimes directly from the
camera—thus eliminating the time-consuming transcoding and rewrapping
process required when you use the same media in Final Cut Pro. Second,
you maintain the pristine image quality of your source footage
throughout the production process. Finally, because Adobe Premiere Pro
does not convert the file to a proprietary format, metadata acquired
from the camera is retained throughout the production process.

3. Get industry-leading performance and stability from the new Adobe
Mercury Playback Engine
Completely redesigned for blazingly fast performance, the Mercury
Playback Engine in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 is native 64-bit, optimized
for multicore, and GPU-accelerated to provide an amazingly fluid, real-
time editing experience. Be creative without worrying about the
ramifications of additional effects and high-resolution content.

Multilayer performance
Combine P2, XDCAM, RED, DSLR, DV, and other footage on the timeline;
play with the look and flow at full-frame rate; and view in real time
on an external HD monitor. With configurations capable of supporting
more than nine simultaneous layers and dozens of effects, the Adobe
Mercury Playback Engine makes every production more creative and
efficient.

Kinda confusing....

The link you provide starts out saying "Save more than $500" and then
continues by saying:

"If you own Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator CS or higher, Adobe Premiere
or Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects 6, 7 or any CS or Adobe Flash CS3
or higher you can save more than $500 on the CS5 Production Premium
with this special point product upgrade."

but the actual upgrade offer (for either PC or Mac) shows only a $50
savings on a "Regular Price $1099".

Where is the "more than $500 saving" offered?

OK, I see the confusion. We have several things going on at the same
time.

Adobe uses the $500 discount as part of their marketing message on
CS5. The Full version of CS5 Prod Prem is $1699 MSRP, the point-
product upgrade (from say Premiere) is $1199 MSRP. hence the $500
savings.

We discount from MSRP to $1099, and for this promo we are actually
discounting an additional $50 from our normal sale price to $1049

Then we include the Bonus Pack ($249 value) of Magic Bullet Quicklooks
and the Class On Demand CS5 training for FREE.

I hope that explains it better. I'll make sure we do a better job in
the future.

That's all fine, but the real cost of "switching" to CS5 is a hell of a lot
more than the price of the software. To even be capable of using the CS5,
you need a 64 bit motherboard and processor, and if it is AMD as I have, the
Athlon 64 won't do, no, you've got to have the Phenom multicore at least. So
I would need a new mobo, processor, RAM, and a video card from NVidia that
would run over $500, typically $800. Finally, to replace my crummy Matrox
RT-X2 with something that can cope with AVCHD and CS5, I would need the new
Matrox MX02.

I could upgrade to CS5 for free right now, but I can't afford it!

CS5 requires a fast computer. No doubt about that. You can build a DIY
machine based on the Intel Core i7 for under $2,000
http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+DIY8+Sneak+Peek+Work+in+Progess+Coming+this+Fall/0x094b1737e0a06c495e5178a167fbdbd7.aspx

While I know this is frustrating for those running an older computer,
this is what it takes to handle todays HD workflows such as AVCHD,
DSLR footage and XD CAM HD. While other NLEs may be able to handle
this footage, CS5 gives you a very efficient, productive and stable
editing environment.

I'm going to give Adobe some credit here. Almost 6 months before CS5
shipped they started talking about the requirements of Premiere Pro
CS5. It would only be 64 bit, it would require a CUDA based nVideo
card for optimum performance, and it would take advantage of multiple
processing cores. They knew it was going to create issues for
upgraders, but the improvements they could design in by not being 32-
bit far outweighed it. Always a tough decision, and one made I'm sure
prior to the current economy.

The article is now posted on our website as a Guide, without the sales
pitch here:

Oh yes - I forgot the operating system. I would need a 64 bit operating
system, Windows 7 Pro for another $200, and to reprogram everything I have
on my computer.

I just went thru a total upgrade to a new computer and CS4 Production
Premium. I acquired the pieces gradually, so the cost wouldn't hurt as bad.
Now this.

Just please put the caveat of the system requirements in every ad for CS5,
and some links to a list of the items needed to purchase.

You're both right and wrong...

Premier CS5 does need a 64-bit system, but Production Premium CS5
provides a 32-bit version of photoshop CS5 and premier CS4 if you're
still on a 32-bit system.

So you're right that Premier CS5 needs a 64-bit system, but Production
Premium CS5 does not.

So, if you're still on CS3 (or earlier) and 32-bit, it's still worth
the upgrade. Especially if you want features in the other bundled
products.

(I went from a 2.6Ghz Core2duo w/4GB running CS3 on XP to a i7-960
w/9GB running CS5 on Win7-64, and I can't get over how much faster it
renders. Of course, when you crank all 8 cores to 100%, it becomes
a jet engine and a space heater too. Should be great this winter.
Can't wait to see if it cuts my heating bills...)

Thanks for clarifying, Gary. I have to say that the '$500 savings' for
those who are upgrading versus those who are buying the full product is
not, in any way, a true "discount" in my book, so I would call the
advertising a real stretch.

The $50 discount and the bundled Bonus Pack are nice incentives for a
prospective buyer, but the website gives a misleading impression as it
is currently written.

I will be interested to see if the website is actually corrected to
remove the specious $500 discount claim, or at least honestly describe
it as the Adobe discount offered to current customers wishing to do an
upgrade.
