question on stand-alone .rar video files

I notice that some multimedia files have stand-alone .rar files
without any .par files and when I dl them and attempt to unzip and
extract them - the results are .exe files that I am fearful of
opening. Are these files safe to open or do they contain malware?

Any insights would be appreciated

These are typically malware.

Most genuine posts typically are multi-set rar files with par sets and
contain real video files.

Some posters will post the actual video file in split sets and not use
an archiver like rar.

Pretty much anything that's a exe posted to usenet is likely malware.
